Isaac THOMAS of Hawkes Bay NZ

Isaac's THOMAS ancesters were Henry 1710, John 1739, James 1774, John 1795, James 1822.

Isaac was born 1854 and baptised at St. Arvans on the outskirts of Chepstow, Monmouthshire, South Wales, the third child and son of James and Eliza.

James 1822 (my GG Uncle) was a domestic gardener who had married Eliza (Vaughan) a dressmaker, at St. Arvans in 1849. He had come from Llanvihangel Torymynydd-Llanishen (in the Wye Valley) where our THOMAS clan lived since 1794.

Isaac's siblings were George 1850, Henry James (Harry) 1851, & Fred 1856.

In 1875 (at the age of 21) Isaac sailed from London on the "Inverness", landing at Napier on 28 November. Isaac's Uncle John Thomas had migrated just two months earlier to Timaru, South Canterbury.

Isaac must have written good reports home, as older brother Henry followed him out to Napier in 1876-7.

In October 1878 Isaac married Elizabeth FRANKLIN from Milton Oxfordshire, and they had a family of four. Elizabeth died age 26 in December 1885 leaving four young children: Ellen May (Nellie) 6, Martha (Mattie) 4+, Albert nearly 3, & Mary 1. Elizabeth is buried at Napier.

In February 1886 Isaac married widow Margaret HARVEY (whose origin I have not discovered) and I presume she was "mother" to the children, though she bore none of her own. Margaret died age 45 in August 1898, by which time the youngest child, Mary was 14. Margaret is buried at Hastings.

Isaac's parents remained living at St, Arvans until their deaths in 1898 (Eliza) & 1907 (James).

In May 1901 Isaac married Eliza BRADSHAW, at the Hastings residence of Mrs. Power. Eliza had migrated from Monaghan Ireland with her sister Rachel. Isaac & Eliza lived at Twyford, Greenmeadows, St. George Road, and Allerton Road.

"Isaac & Elizabeth gained the freehold of two or three acres of good land in Allerton Road in the Stortford Lodge area. There was a four room cottage with out-buildings, an artesian well, fruit trees, garden, .... poultry, and grazing for two or three cows".
